But The Greatest of These is Love…

A warrior wouldn’t go into battle carrying his sword but forgetting his helmet and shield. Although he has the most important instrument he is still inadequately prepared for battle and cannot fight to his full capacity. He can attack but will be unable to defend. A warrior who has no means of defense will not last long, and as Christians, if we are only partially equipped we will never achieve all that God has called us to do.

Paul says that the three most important things to have are faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love. When we hear “the greatest of these is love” we’re quick to ignore the previous scripture. The three most important things to have are FAITH, HOPE, and LOVE. Though the greatest may be love, the second and third most important things we can achieve are faith and hope.

It is true that love never fails but it is faith that has healed so many people in the past, and it is hope that gives us the ability to go on when it seems that we have nothing left to live for. It was Abraham’s faith that made him right with God. His faith allowed him to know that if he sacrificed Isaac then God would raise him from the dead to fulfill his promise through Isaac so Abraham would be the father of many nations. It was Job’s hope that enabled him not to curse God in the midst of losing everything—family, friends, house, livestock, and health. However, even though he did, Job never once cursed God.

Love is the most important thing that we as Christians can have. If we don’t know love we can’t know God. God is love. But the second and third most important things are faith and hope. It is important that we don’t focus on love without also focusing on the other aspects that God has called us to strive for.
